Packing Tips
Our packing tips and packing check
list help you organize things before during and after your vacation. Please feel free to
print this page off so you have a hard copy to refer to.
General Travel Packing Tips:
The type and quantity of items you decide to pack will be
determined by your destination and the length of time you are going to stay.
Common sense will dictate which of these tips, and which items, in the check lists
apply to you. If you remember the old traveler's maxim: "pack half as many
clothes and bring twice as much money" you will do well with your packing.
These lists apply to the maximum amount of things you would ever want to cart
around.
{
Avoiding creases & wrinkles
Fold clothes together so that they are intertwined rather than separate. This
is unlike how you would normally fold clothes for a dresser. Plan where you are
going to place the contents of each piece of luggage. In general place the more
crease prone garments in the middle where they are protected and padded by more
hardy ones such as underpants and socks which are placed or rolled up toward the
outside. if you run out of hardy garments you can always use tissue paper for
padding.
{
Item Placement:
Those who know how to pack a grocery bag would be natural at packing for
travel. Heavier and hardier objects should be placed on the bottom while lighter
and more delicate objects sit nearer the top. Apply clothing padding around delicate
breakables. Remember to pack a spare bag for souvenirs and gifts you intend to bring home.
{
Pack Travel Appropriate Fabrics
Certain fabrics are better for traveling because they resist wrinkling. These
are micro fiber types such as lycra, nylon and tencel. Thinner clothing is more
comfortable and easier to peel off, or put on, as the climate changes.
{
Packing Your Carry on Bag:
The carry on bag is near you at all times. This is the best place to
keep your important documents, things that are difficult to replace and
valuables. It is also a good place to keep a day or two worth of personal
supplies in case you luggage is lost or delayed. See the check list of what not
to bring on the plane below.
{
Packing in Advance:
Many travelers have stories of being rushed at the last minute and leaving
something behind.
{
Pack Half as Much:
Pack half of what you plan to. Almost everyone tends to pack clothing they
never wear on their trip. Too much luggage of badly designed luggage will hamper
your movement.
{
Packing Exchange:
Pack one of your companion's outfits in your bag and have them pack one of
yours in their bag. If one of your bags is delayed the owner will still have
clothing.
{
Need New Luggage?
If considering buying new luggage we recommend: retractable rollers (easy
movement); removable straps (don't get caught on conveyor belts); a lock; carry
on luggage that fits within the size limits - see Airline Contacts for details.
{
Dirty Clothing:
When caught with soiled clothing put it in a separate plastic bag. The new
sealable compressible plastic bags are ideal for this.
